Is your garage door suddenly stopping when it’s going up? If you heard a loud bang, like a gunshot, and now the torsion springs above your door look separated, then you likely have a broken torsion garage door spring. Torsion springs are located above the garage door and they are what lift the actual weight of the garage door. Most doors weigh between 150 to 250 pounds and without working springs, the garage door opener cannot lift the door. Trying to use a garage door opener to lift a garage door with a broken spring can cause many different parts on the opener to break.
A broken garage door spring is one of the worst things that can happen to your garage door. Not only will the door not open, but trying to fix the problem yourself can be extremely dangerous. You should never attempt to replace a broken spring yourself – only experienced, trained professionals should ever touch torsion springs. Replacing a spring also requires expertise to know exactly which spring to replace it with. The correct springs are determined based off the weight of the door.
There are hundreds of combinations of springs but only one is correct for your door. It is important to have the correct springs to prevent an array of problems in the future. With the wrong springs, your opener will break much quicker and your door is more likely to come off tracks.
It is alarming how many installers use the wrong size springs. Knowing which springs to use can only be determined by experience. That’s why it’s crucial that you find an installer who has plenty of experience and can guarantee that they’ll use the right springs for your door. Otherwise, you’ll end up with more problems down the line.

Garage Door Spring Repair
Torsion springs won’t last forever, no matter what some companies might say. The truth is, there’s no such thing as a “lifetime” spring – all springs have a limited lifespan. Most builders usually install the cheapest door possible, which usually comes with lower-quality springs that don’t last as long. A torsion spring’s lifespan is determined by the number of cycles it’s rated to last. Every time the door goes up and down counts as one “cycle.” The springs that builders typically install might only last for 7,500 cycles, which means the average homeowner can only expect to get 3-5 years out of them.
Is your door having trouble staying open? Does it look like it’s sagging or crooked? Can you see a break in the spring that runs along the side of the tracks? If so, you might have a broken extension spring. Extension springs are generally used on smaller doors, like an 8×7 or 9×7. They’re attached to the bracket that holds the horizontal track to the ceiling, and they extend as the door goes down. With one broken, the door can’t work properly. Usually one spring is broken while the other isn’t, but we would replace both because they’ve been used the same amount. Springs break based on usage, so it’s likely that if one is broken, the other isn’t far behind.
It is essential that you use garage door springs that are the correct size for your door. Using the wrong size springs can result in your door not functioning properly and can also cause your opener to break much sooner. Replacing extension springs can be very dangerous and if done incorrectly, can injure someone using the garage door.
